Below are 2D videos with accompanying audio, the most recent ones from 2023 with the remaining from 2016. Both audio and video were recorded "live" without any post-production studio processing. The audio performance and video processing is improvised, though each piece has distinct source material and effects settings in addition to different audio instrumentation such as bass guitar, ambient recordings (mostly in 5.1 surround) and other audio samples. The audio from the most recent 2023 videos is generated from audio clips which trigger randomly and then effect the video processing.
The source videos in the works below are mostly from 1080p video cameras and were all recorded by Jeff Noble during travels over the years. In the earlier videos (2016) the effects processing technology is Max / Jitter software. In most cases iPhone motion-sensing generally controls both the audio and video effects as well as triggering samples, modifying spatialization of the ambient recordings as well as "mixing" the sounds and video clips via a virtual mixing board. In the recent 2023 videos which were all done during a summer spent in LA, the audio is all from pre-recorded clips many of which are ambient recordings recorded during travels.
The 2016 videos largely use audio from multi-tracked bass guitar which comes from an ambient-drone orientation, but there is also ample use of ambient sound recordings and pieces like Even Calcutta are entirely audio-clip based. Many of the other audio clips were recorded with a Holophone 5.1 surround microphone which allows for separate processing of the separate tracks and can be performed live in a "surround" 6-channel configuration.
Ouidah
Processed video from a Vodoun ceremony in Ouidah, Benin. Video produced in 2023.
Alta Floresta
Processed video from a boat ride near Alta Floresta in the southern Amazon of Brazil. Video produced in 2023.
Varanasi
Processed video from Varanasi, India. Video produced in 2023.
Wyoming
Processed video of gas flaring in Wyoming (2023). From some of my first digital video shot with a Sony handycam back in the early aughts.
SEA SAW
Generously processed video taken from a coral field in the Banda Islands of Indonesia with audio generated from a single sawtooth waveform then multi-tracked and likewise heavily processed. Coral was found at a depth of 3-4 feet underwater and filmed from above which gives it a shimmering, fluid effect. Even without the ample video processing as seen here, the underlying video has an hypnotic quality. See still example in first photo on 2D Photo page. Produced in 2016.
Wah Dee
Video of rock formations shot in the desert at Wadi Rum, Jordan with solo bass guitar audio. Both audio and video are processed using iPhone motion-sensing. Bass guitar is multi-tracked with tracks feeding back into each other and all audio processing is "mixed" live in real-time. No additional post-production audio or video processing is used. Produced in 2016.
Even Calcutta
iPhone video of a walk through the streets of Kolkata (Calcutta) with audio generated from a single bagpipe sample with multi-tracked processing on a virtual mixer controlled by motion-sensing. Digital grime courtesy of Sonalksis.
Vodun Egoun
Audio and video recording from Ouidah, Benin in 2015. Ouidah was one of the largest slave ports in Africa and is a centre for vodun (or voodooo). This was a ceremony where "egoun", the manifestation of the spiritual ancestors are paraded. Both audio and video were "played" and processed simultaneously and no post-production effects were added. Performance is executed in 6-channel audio. The original video was shot in 3D-HD and this piece is performed in 3D as well.
Water Bass
HD video from waterfall near a Lacanja village in Chiapas, Mexico. Audio is from a single bass guitar with digital processing using motion-sensing control from two iPhones. Video is straight with no processing and accompanies the bass guitar during performance and this recording. Video was originally shot in 3D (HD) and the performance of this piece is done in both 2D or 3D formats.
Fast Conet
Sampled audio and HD and iPhone video from various sources, including video from Benin, India, Japan, Indonesia, Myanmar, Wyoming and audio recordings mostly from both third-party sources and my own recorded library. Audio and video are heavily processed using iPhone motion-sensing controlled effects. Video was exported in 720p resolution.
Howl Boat
Video of boat ride through the Amazon delta in Maranhão, Brazil with 5.1 audio recording from the Serere Lodge, near the Madidi Park in Bolivia which boasts a large community of howler monkeys. Both audio and video are processed in real-time using motion-sensing. The piece is faded after 8 minutes and spliced with the final 4 minutes of the original performance. Video was exported in 720p resolution.
